Dr. Mervin “Spectac” Jenkins - Holly Hill-Roberts High

Orangeburg County School District (OCSD) proudly recognizes Dr. Mervin Jenkins, widely known as “Spectac,” as its latest Alumni Spotlight honoree, celebrating a distinguished career rooted in education, creativity, and a deep commitment to empowering others.
A proud graduate of Holly Hill-Roberts High School, Dr. Jenkins returns to his hometown as a nationally recognized author, entertainer, and lifelong educator whose work continues to inspire across classrooms and communities. His journey from the halls of Holly Hill-Roberts to national platforms, stands as a powerful testament to the impact of public education and the promise of purpose-driven leadership.
“It is truly an honor to be recognized by the community that helped shape me,” said Dr. Jenkins. “Holly Hill and Orangeburg County poured into me long before I understood the full weight of that investment. To return home and be celebrated in this way is both humbling and deeply meaningful. I carry this community with me in every space I enter, and I hope my journey reminds our students that greatness can grow right here.”
Dr. Jenkins’ career spans nearly three decades in education and youth development. He has served as a teacher, school administrator, assistant director for a national nonprofit, and senior manager in the education technology sector. His influence extends beyond traditional roles, as his passion for music and culture has allowed him to collaborate with Grammy-nominated hip-hop artists and producers, bringing innovative, culturally responsive approaches into the educational space.
A respected thought leader, Dr. Jenkins has been featured on NPR and was invited to participate in the 2014 White House My Brother’s Keeper Initiative under President Barack Obama, contributing to national conversations on equity and opportunity for young men of color.
He is the author of two impactful books, Before They Leave Here, While They Are with Us and To the Beat of Leadership: A Story of High and Low Notes, both of which reflect his commitment to leadership, mentorship, and meaningful engagement with students.
Most recently, during the holiday season, Dr. Jenkins and his family demonstrated their continued commitment to community by sponsoring a food drive in partnership with Silas United Methodist Church, helping to ensure that families in the community had access to meals during a critical time of need. This act of service further reflects his lifelong dedication to uplifting others both inside and outside of the classroom.
Currently, Dr. Jenkins serves as Director, Solutions Consultant for Renaissance, where he champions the integration of hip-hop pedagogy to create engaging, relevant, and transformative learning experiences for students.
“Dr. Jenkins represents the very best of Orangeburg County School District,” said OCSD Superintendent Dr. Shawn D. Foster. “His journey reflects what is possible when person, purpose, and platform are nurtured in our schools. He has taken his experiences here and translated them into impact on a national scale, while never losing sight of where he started. We are incredibly proud to honor him and to share his story as an inspiration to our students and community.”
Now residing on Johns Island, South Carolina, with his wife, Chiffon, Dr. Jenkins continues to influence the field of education through innovation, storytelling, and a steadfast belief in the power of connection.
OCSD’s Alumni Spotlight program celebrates graduates who exemplify excellence and whose contributions uplift their communities and professions. Dr. Jenkins’ recognition not only honors his accomplishments but also reinforces the district’s mission to ensure every student discovers and develops their person, purpose, and platform.
