IAAM Partnership

Field trips are offered Tuesday-Thursday at 9:30 AM, 10:00AM, 10:30AM, and 11:00AM. We ask that field trips be scheduled at least one month in advance.

Yes! The field trip learning objective is to deepen content comprehension and critical thinking skills related to Social Studies.  They achieve this by adhering to the following South Carolina curriculum standards:

4th:

 4.4.E, 4.4.CX, 4.5.CE, 4.5.P, 4.5.E, 4.5.CC, 4.5.CO, 4.5.CX

8th:

Refer to IAAM's Education Program/Event page.  Free admission is available for ALL SC schools but only OCSD and CCSD 4th, 8th, and 11th grades are part of the program pilot with IAAM.

Free for students, teachers, and chaperones. Transportation reimbursements are available for schools that require subsidies.

No more than 40 students are permitted per entry time. Entry times are 9:30 AM, 10:00 AM, 10:30 AM, and 11:00 AM, Tuesday-Thursday. Schools may request more than one entry time on the same day. Please note that the school must assign one adult per every ten students, providing a 1:10 chaperone-to-student ratio. 

Please plan to arrive 30 minutes before the assigned entry time.

No, groups do not run at the same time but they can slightly overlap using different entry times.  

Example:

Ms. Smith has 120 students to attend the museum.  She has requested 3 entry times for that day, 10 AM, 10:30 AM, and 11:00 AM.  She must keep in mind that only one group of 40 may enter at their designated time.

Ms. Smith must plan what the other groups will do while waiting for entry into the museum.  While Group 2 only has to wait 30 minutes, Group 3 has to wait an hour.  Group 1 will also wait for almost an hour while the other groups conclude their visit.  These logistics are entirely up to Ms. Smith so she has planned according.

The responsibilities for planning a field trip remain the same. The main difference is booking is handled through a OCSD Liaison.  For reference, see below for a general summary of booking a field trip at the IAAM.

1. Submit field trip request form.    

2. The International African American Museum will contact you to go over your options. Dates will be confirmed.

3. If scheduling a field trip, fill out and turn in OCSD Field Experience Form for approval, following OCSD policy.

• The Memorial Garden at the IAAM is free and open to the public. It can provide a great experience before entering the museum.
• The SC Aquarium has several activities such as Scavenger hunts that can take 30 minutes to an hour to complete.
• Nearby parks for teacher-led experiences and/or snacks.
• Check around the area to see what could work for you and your students.
