Board Recognitions | April 16, 2024

We celebrated the outstanding achievements of student-athletes in OCSD Winter Sports, hailing from Hunter-Kinard-Tyler High School, Branchville High School, Lake Marion High School, Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School, Edisto High School, North Middle/High School, and Bethune-Bowman Middle/High School, recognizing their hard work and passion for the game. Lake Marion High School's Quiz Bowl Team was lauded for their remarkable victory at the South Carolina Black History Quiz Bowl Championship, overcoming an 8-point deficit and securing the win with 19 out of 20 final round questions. Additionally, the dedication and talent of COPE Area Career Center's SkillsUSA and HOSA winners were acknowledged, along with the talented artists recognized in the SCEA Read Across America Art Contest. The meeting also honored Terrence Caldwell, an Orangeburg native whose journey from Marshall Elementary to Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School culminated in remarkable achievements as an electrical engineer and the founder of HBCU Alum LLC. Terrence's philanthropic efforts through the HBCU Bound Scholarship program reflect his commitment to giving back, exemplifying ambition, service, and community engagement.

Board Recognitions | March 12, 2024

OCSD Board Meeting celebrated outstanding students and educators, starting with accolades for participants of the 2024 MLK Oratory Competition and standout performances from Junior Beta Clubs at the 31st Annual Elementary/Junior Beta Convention, including those from St. James Galliard, Mellichamp, Elloree, Holly Hill, Lockett, Vance-Providence, and Holly Hill-Roberts. Additionally, the Branchville Senior Beta Club was praised for their achievements at the 86th Annual Senior Beta Convention. Their academic and creative prowess was commended as an inspiration to all. Dr. Demestress “Dee” Bell, a graduate of Hunter-Kinard-Tyler High Class of 1998, was highlighted for her impactful work as an educator, demonstrating the power of passion for education and community.

Congratulations to Verta Jones and Sonya Thompson for being honored as OCSD Bus Driver and Bus Monitor of the Year! We also recognized Amanda Fair-Coles of Dover Elementary for receiving the prestigious Milken Educator Award, and Mr. Maurice Middleton as WLTX Teacher of the Week. Additionally, Lockett Elementary was announced as a finalist for the NIET Founder’s Award, highlighting their dedication to excellence in education. We're proud to spotlight our OCSD Alumni achievers, including Dr. Shalonda Oliver, Chief Nursing Informatics Officer at Ralph H. Johnson VA Healthcare System, and Dr. Joseph Rush, founder of Cultivating Leaders and engineer at Boeing South Carolina. Furthermore, we celebrated the achievements of our fall/winter sports teams and athletes district-wide, from Orangeburg-Wilkinson High to Edisto High, Lake Marion High to Bethune-Bowman High, and Branchville High. Let's applaud their dedication and hard work!
