OCSD TO RESUME ATHLETIC PLAY WITHOUT IN-PERSON SPECTATORS
Orangeburg County School District administration, in collaboration with Athletic Directors and High School Principals, made the decision today to resume Varsity Winter Sports. The decision comes after student athletes in districts throughout the state began regional athletic competition last week. “With at least five of the 50 12th grade student-athletes being scouted for athletic scholarships, I think I speak for all of us in saying that giving our senior student-athletes the opportunity to pursue post-secondary endeavors without cost was a priority,” Superintendent Dr. Shawn Foster said of their deliberation.
Girls and Boys Basketball Games and Wrestling Matches will resume the week of January 19. Student athletes and their families will receive additional information from their coaches. In the coming days, the competition schedule, once finalized, will be shared on the Athletic Pages of each school’s new website.
With the exception of a pre-arranged visit from a college scout, until further notice, OCSD's games and matches will be held without spectators. We understand that families want to watch their children compete and we regret that you will be unable to do so in person at this time. While we are not in a position to fully outfit our gymnasiums with state-of-the-art videography equipment for a high-quality virtual viewing experience, we are making arrangements now to use available existing equipment to stream the games to our high school websites. We recognize that this will not take the place of being at the games and matches, in person, and appreciate your understanding and patience as we do our very best to provide our students with opportunities, while protecting their and our coaches, Athletic Directors, and other employees’ health and safety.
