On Sunday, we hope that each of you had an opportunity to read in the Times & Democrat newspaper about our very own Coordinator of Nursing Services Patti Padgett, who was nominated by her colleagues and selected as one of the 10 featured Heart of Health Care award winners.

As our Lead Nurse, Nurse Padgett leads a team of 29 school nurses to promote school health services and support the school system in coordinating efforts to ensure the health and wellness of students, faculty, and staff.

If there was ever a question as to what makes Nurse Padgett the best Lead Nurse for OCSD, her leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic is the answer.

Touted as one of the most effective Lead Nurses in our state by Nurse Victoria Ladd, State School Nurse Consultant for the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) and the South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE), Nurse Padgett is a leader among leaders.

Nurse Padgett provides our school district community with common mitigation practices and protocols to reduce the spread of disease. All this is done through collaboration with health care partners, DHEC, the Center of Disease Control (CDC), our school nurses, and district leadership to identify and put in place process and protocols aimed to create safe environments for students, teachers, staff members, and families in our district.

You may recall that Nurse Padgett and our school nurses volunteered to vaccinate community members by the hundreds during Community Vaccination Clinics held at the Fairgrounds this winter. Additionally, she led our collaboration with Family Health Center to host two vaccination clinics for teachers and staff to receive their vaccines.

We believe that we have the best Lead Nurse in the country. Her calm demeanor, coupled with a passion for the health and wellness of all, have allowed each of us to navigate the challenges of this pandemic safely, while continuing our commitment to educating our community’s children.

Our district is honored to support Nurse Padgett as a 2021 Heart of Health Care honoree for her steadfast leadership and exceptional work as our lead health care professional. To Nurse Padgett, the nurses in our schools, and all who have safely led us through the last year, we thank you and wish each of you a Happy Nurses Day tomorrow. #thankOCSDnurses
