Holly Hill Elementary Beta Club Wins "Sing it to Win it" Covid-19 Vaccine Jingle Contest
Holly Hill, SC, February 2, 2022 – Fresh off their 25 award winning victories at the state's Beta convention in January, the National Beta members from Holly Hill Elementary School (HHE) are celebrating another outstanding victory in a contest sponsored by the South Carolina Department of Education and the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC).
The “Sing It to Win It” jingle contest was announced in November of 2021 asking schools, classes, or school clubs to compose an original jingle encouraging adults to become vaccinated. First Place would receive $10,000, Second Place $5,000 and Third Place $3,000.
“The contest was brought to my attention by Mrs. Roe Hunt, our school’s SIS Op (Student Information System Operator) who saw it on the news during our Thanksgiving break,” says Mr. Joseph Brown, Holly Hill’s School Counselor and Beta Club sponsor. “With so many of our students qualifying for the national convention in Nashville this summer, I knew winning first place would help reduce the cost for our parents and students.”
Mr. Brown and Beta Club students brainstormed ideas for lyrics and rhythm and created a creative jingle of their own. For placing first, the HHE Beta club members will have their jingle professionally recorded and used in commercials throughout the state.
“We are so proud of our Beta members’ efforts each year as they compete against students from across the state” Brown said.” Our Beta sponsor team of Mr. Jason Bryant, Mrs. Miriam James, Dr. Carlos Jenkins, Ms. Chanel Murray, Mrs. Myrrh Suan, and Mrs. Shelia Washington along with support from our Principal Mr. Johnnie Smith and the entire HHE family play a role in our success.”
The Beta Club at HHE began actively participating in competitions in 1998. Since that time, HHE’s Beta club has won more than 60 state and national awards, been recognized as a School of Merit and a School of Distinction.
“We can’t thank our teachers in Pre-K through third grade enough for preparing our students to become Betas, and our fourth and fifth grade teachers for keeping them prepared during their two years as Beta members, said Mr. Brown. “We also could not achieve our success if not for the support of our parents and community.”
The $10,000 won in the “Sing It to Win It” jingle contest will cover roughly a third of the cost for each student to travel to the National Beta Club competition this summer in Nashville, Tennessee. Individuals and businesses interested in donating to the Club’s National Convention travel expenses are encouraged to reach out to Mr. Brown directly at Joseph.Brown@ocsdsc.org.
HHE BETA CLUB COVID-19 JINGLE
COVID’s been around too long,
Has made us weak when we were strong
It’s up to you to do or not
We just ask, “Please get your shot!”
It shouldn’t be complicated,
We just want you vaccinated.
Take it from us kids at school,
Wearing these masks is not “Too Cool”.
Vaccines won’t cramp your style,
We just want to see your “SMILE.”
