DR. MACIE P. SMITH – A JOURNEY OF SERVICE, LEADERSHIP, AND ADVOCACY
Dr. Macie P. Smith, a 1995 graduate of North Middle High School, exemplifies the idea that one person can make an incredible impact, no matter where they come from. Raised in the small town of Norway, South Carolina, Dr. Smith’s journey is proof to the power of education, determination, and giving back to the community that shaped her. Her work spans over two decades, and through it, she’s changed lives—particularly those of older adults and families living with Alzheimer's, dementia, and other cognitive impairments.
After graduating from North High, Smith attended South Carolina State University, where she earned both her Bachelor’s in Social Work and a Master’s in Rehabilitation Counseling. Her education at SCSU, an institution she holds close to her heart, set the stage for a career dedicated to helping others. She later earned a Doctorate in Higher Education Leadership from Nova Southeastern University, further solidifying her commitment to both service and education.
Dr. Smith’s career has been shaped by her passion for improving the lives of vulnerable populations. She is a Licensed Gerontology Social Worker and has worked extensively with individuals and families dealing with Alzheimer's, dementia, traumatic brain injuries, and other cognitive challenges. As an award-winning educator, author, and caregiver advocate, she has authored practical guides for dementia caregivers, and her work has reached a global audience through professional journals, conferences, and media appearances.
Her career isn’t just about writing books or giving speeches—it’s about making a direct, positive impact on people’s lives. Dr. Smith is deeply involved in the community as a Guardian ad Litem and Court Appointed Guardian for the Richland County Probate Court, advocating for vulnerable individuals in legal matters. She also founded Diversified Training Consultants Group, a Geriatric Care Management organization focused on providing families with the tools they need to navigate the complexities of caregiving.
Dr. Smith's influence extends beyond her professional practice into her role as a public advocate. She co-hosts Dementia Divas: Caregiving & The Arts on Saltbox TV, a talk show where she educates viewers on dementia care while exploring the intersection of caregiving and the arts. She’s also a regular contributor to WIS-TV’s Soda City Live, where she shares expert advice on health topics, particularly related to aging and caregiving.
In 2021, Dr. Smith was elected to the Board of Trustees at South Carolina State University, where she now serves as the Vice Chairwoman. Her leadership on the Board reflects her deep commitment to advancing higher education, especially at an institution that has had such a profound impact on her life. Her belief in the power of education to transform lives has remained a cornerstone of her career and continues to guide her in every role she holds.
Reflecting on her time at North High, Dr. Smith credits the guidance of mentors like Ms. Hubbard, a teacher who held her to high expectations and pushed her to believe in herself. She also remembers Elmo Jackson, a custodian, who was a steady source of encouragement and positivity during her high school years. These early influences shaped the values of compassion, leadership, and determination that Dr. Smith carries with her to this day.
Dr. Smith’s story is a reminder that big things can come from small towns. She has spent her career working tirelessly to lift up the lives of those around her—whether by advocating for caregivers, educating families, or making sure the voices of those with dementia and Alzheimer’s are heard. She’s a two-time best-selling author, a sought-after speaker, and a leader in her field, but she hasn’t forgotten where she comes from.
Her message is clear: no matter where you start, you can reach incredible heights if you are driven by a passion to help others and guided by a deep sense of purpose. Dr. Macie Smith is not just an alumna of Orangeburg County School District—she is a powerful example of how education and dedication can change the world. Through her work, she continues to make a profound impact, proving that small towns truly do produce big dreams—and even bigger achievements.
