Orangeburg County School District proudly recognizes Dr. Wakesha Evans, a 1994 graduate of North High School, as this month’s OCSD Alumni Spotlight. A trailblazer, scholar, and lifelong learner, Dr. Evans’s journey from a small-town student-athlete to a respected medical professional and educator serves as an inspiration to students across the district.

Growing up in North, South Carolina, a “one stoplight town full of good people and good energy,” as she fondly recalls, Evans thrived both in the classroom and on the field. A member of the Student Government Association, FBLA, and numerous other school clubs, she also led her softball team as captain to the state playoffs. Evans made district history as the first student ever to become a South Carolina Junior Scholar, a milestone that reflected her academic excellence and drive even at a young age.

After graduating from North High, she attended Claflin University on a full academic and partial softball scholarship, earning a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry. Her educational journey continued with multiple advanced degrees, including a Master’s in Biomedical Sciences with a concentration in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine from the Medical University of South Carolina, a Master’s in Physician Assistant Studies, and ultimately a Doctorate in Medical Science.

Dr. Evans’s professional path has included teaching science at Denmark-Olar High School, mentoring college students at Claflin University, Voorhees College, and Denmark Technical College, and serving her community in the medical field. Through it all, she credits her small-town roots, faith, and family for shaping her values and determination.

“North was a small town, but full of great people who cared,” said Dr. Evans. “We were taught to do things right or not at all, and that’s a lesson I’ve carried throughout my life. Where there’s a will, there’s a way. If you have the energy and faith to pursue your dreams, God will provide the resources.”

Despite facing hardships, including the loss of her father during her freshman year of high school and financial challenges throughout her education, Dr. Evans never wavered in her pursuit of excellence. She now dedicates her time to mentoring and writing letters of recommendation for students entering college and the medical field, continuing to uplift the next generation of scholars and professionals.

“We are so proud to celebrate Dr. Evans as a shining example of what it means to represent Orangeburg County,” said Dr. Shawn D. Foster, Superintendent. “Her journey from North High School to the medical field shows how our schools, our families, and our community can prepare students for greatness.”

To current OCSD students, Dr. Evans offers this advice: “Don’t let fear stagnate you. The world is big, and there are big opportunities waiting for you if you’re willing to step out on faith and choose faith over fear.” Orangeburg County School District celebrates Dr. Evans for her remarkable achievements, her commitment to education, and her continued impact on the lives of others.
