SHERIFF LEROY RAVENELL: FROM OCSD STUDENT TO COMMUNITY LEADER

Sheriff Leroy Ravenell, a 1982 graduate of Holly Hill-Roberts High School, has dedicated his life to serving the people of Orangeburg County. As a lifelong resident of the Santee community, he has become an integral part of the region, taking on the responsibility of safeguarding its citizens and providing leadership in numerous capacities. Currently serving as the 52nd Sheriff of Orangeburg County, Sheriff Ravenell is in his third term, a testimony to his commitment to law enforcement and public safety.

Sheriff Ravenell’s path to law enforcement started in 1987 when he realized his calling to serve his community. It was then that he began working with the Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office, serving in various roles and quickly rising through the ranks. His career, marked by dedication and a strong sense of duty, led him to become Sheriff. As a law enforcement officer, he is known for his belief in being firm, fair, and consistent. This philosophy has guided his actions and decision-making, earning him the respect of both his colleagues and the community he serves.

A graduate of Claflin University with a degree in Sociology and Criminal Justice, Sheriff Ravenell later obtained a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice from Troy University. His education, combined with years of hands-on experience, has helped shape his leadership approach. Ravenell is a firm believer in the power of education and often returns to his alma mater as an adjunct professor, where he shares his knowledge with future law enforcement professionals. He is passionate about providing students with the same support and guidance he received as a young man in Orangeburg County. This commitment to mentorship and education has played a key role in his life, and his efforts extend beyond the classroom.

Sheriff Ravenell’s role as Sheriff has allowed him to tackle a variety of responsibilities, ranging from crime prevention and investigations to jail management and courtroom security. His leadership extends beyond traditional law enforcement duties, as he works to build a safer, stronger community for all. He has created programs such as the Youth Advisory Board, which encourages students to take an active role in their community and understand the importance of law enforcement in promoting safety and justice. By reaching out to young people and encouraging them to engage with law enforcement positively, Sheriff Ravenell shows that the law exists to protect and serve everyone.

One of Sheriff Ravenell’s greatest contributions to the county has been his focus on community policing, ensuring that law enforcement is not just a job but a partnership with the community. He understands that the strength of any county lies in its people, and he has worked tirelessly to ensure that those under his protection have a voice. He believes in fostering communication between citizens and law enforcement officers, ensuring that the concerns of the community are heard and addressed. This approach has earned him numerous awards, including Sheriff of the Year by the South Carolina Sheriff's Association and Law Enforcement Administrator of the Year by the South Carolina Association of School Resource Officers.

Throughout his career, Sheriff Ravenell has received recognition for his leadership abilities. In 2011, he was named Warrior of the Year by Healing Species, and he continues to be a shining example of what it means to serve others. His leadership extends beyond law enforcement, as he is also actively involved in local community organizations. Ravenell is a member of the South Carolina Sheriffs' Association, National Sheriffs’ Association, and other groups dedicated to advancing public safety and improving the quality of life in Orangeburg County. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Orangeburg County Chamber of Commerce, the Law and Public Safety Advisory Board at the Technology Center for Orangeburg School District 5, and is a mentor in Orangeburg School District.

Sheriff Ravenell’s story is not just one of professional success but of a deep and abiding commitment to service. He teaches the importance of responsibility, leadership, and community engagement.
