Jailyn Williams, North High’s Girls Basketball Player, Signs with USC Salkehatchie

Orangeburg County School District proudly celebrates a major achievement for North High School (NHS) student-athlete, Jailyn Williams, who officially signed to continue her academic and athletic career at USC Salkehatchie. Williams, a transfer from Sumter High School and a state championship player, has made an immediate impact on the NHS’s girls basketball program. Averaging 15 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and two steals per game, she has proven to be a dominant force on the court while also excelling in the classroom and serving as a positive leader within the school community.

According to North’s head girls basketball coach and assistant athletic director, I’Rek Hartwell, Williams’ influence extends far beyond statistics. “Jailyn is a tremendous young lady and a huge asset to our program, school, and community. She’s a motivator, a leader, and one of the engines that keep our team going. When she goes, we go. She brings people together and gives our community someone to rally around,” he expressed.

North’s girls basketball team is currently competing in Round Two of the state playoffs, building on last year’s Upper State Championship appearance. With seven returning players from that run, the team has focused on preparation and consistency throughout the season. Coach Hartwell added, “Our preparation started as soon as last season ended. We knew we wanted to get back to this point, and the girls have worked every day through competitive drills and constant improvement to be ready for the postseason.”

District leaders say Williams' signing reflects the strength of both the athletic and academic opportunities available to students across Orangeburg County. Hayward Jean, Director of Student Services, noted that Williams’s journey exemplifies the district’s mission to prepare students for success beyond high school. “I’m really excited for Jailyn. She was able to flourish in a program that allowed her talents to be best displayed. We appreciate Coach Hartwell and the entire program for how they are preparing our OCSD student athletes for the next level,” Jean said.

As the North High girls' basketball team continues its playoff run, the district encourages the community to come out and support the student-athletes representing Orangeburg County on the court. Dr. Shawn D. Foster, Superintendent of Orangeburg County School District, emphasized the broader impact of the milestone. “We are proud of her commitment to excellence both in the classroom and on the court, and we look forward to seeing Jailyn continue to represent Orangeburg County with pride at the collegiate level,” he said.
