Orangeburg County School District (OCSD) proudly announces the appointment of Coach Tommy Brown as the new Head Football Coach at Edisto High School, bringing more than 40 years of coaching, athletic leadership, and student mentorship to the Cougars football program. Coach Brown is widely recognized across South Carolina as a respected educator, mentor, and program builder whose impact extends far beyond the football field. A graduate of South Carolina State University, Coach Brown earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education before later obtaining a Master of Education degree from Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His professional career has included instructional, coaching, and administrative leadership roles at several schools throughout the state. Coach Brown has served as Head Football Coach and Athletic Director at Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School, Fairfield Central High School, Calhoun County High School, Chopee High School, and Bowman High School. His leadership at Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School proved especially impactful, where he helped establish a culture of excellence and competitiveness during multiple tenures with the program. Most recently, Coach Brown served as Assistant Head Football Coach and Defensive Coordinator at Allen University, where he continued mentoring collegiate student-athletes while sharing his extensive defensive expertise and leadership experience.

Throughout his career, Coach Brown has earned numerous honors, including Region Coach of the Year and Area Coach of the Year recognitions. He was also selected to serve as Head Coach for the prestigious South Carolina Shrine Bowl in 2013 and has coached in the North-South All-Star Games. Under his leadership, programs have secured region championships, upper state appearances, and deep playoff runs.

OCSD Superintendent Dr. Shawn D. Foster shared his enthusiasm regarding the appointment. “Coach Tommy Brown brings a wealth of experience, knowledge, and leadership to Edisto High School and Orangeburg County School District,” said Dr. Foster. “His commitment to student development, discipline, and excellence aligns directly with our district’s mission of preparing students for success through academics, athletics, arts, and activities. We are excited to welcome a coach whose legacy speaks not only through wins on the field, but through the lives he has impacted throughout his career, Dr. Foster said.”

Edisto High School Principal Dr. Kemeka Johnson also expressed confidence in the future of the Cougars football program under Coach Brown’s leadership. “We are excited to welcome Coach Brown to the Edisto family,” said Dr. Johnson. “His experience, integrity, and passion for mentoring young people make him an outstanding fit for our school community. We believe he will inspire our student-athletes to excel both on the field and in the classroom while helping build a culture of pride, accountability, and success, she said.”

Coach Brown shared that he is honored for the opportunity to lead the Cougars program and invest in the lives of Edisto High School students. “I am truly grateful for the opportunity to serve as the Head Football Coach at Edisto High School,” said Coach Brown. “Football is about much more than wins and losses. It is about building character, discipline, teamwork, and preparing young men for life beyond the game. I look forward to working with our students, staff, parents, and community as we build a program that reflects pride, hard work, and excellence.”

Beyond athletics, Coach Brown is known as a devoted man of faith and family. He and his wife, Mary Anne Nelson Brown, have been married for 39 years and are proud parents of their son, Courtney.
