Orangeburg County School District (OCSD) proudly celebrates the outstanding achievement of William J. Clark Middle School students Kaitlyn Carson and Kimberly Obiet, who have been selected as two of just 16 winners out of more than 250 entries in a statewide Economics and Financial Literacy art competition.

Their winning illustrations, centered on the economic concepts of Opportunity Cost and Scarcity, demonstrate both artistic excellence and a strong understanding of financial literacy principles. Their artwork will be featured in a published calendar showcasing top student submissions from across South Carolina.

Kaitlyn and Kimberly will be formally recognized at the 37th Annual Economics and Financial Literacy Awards Luncheon on Friday, May 1, 2026, at the Brookland Banquet and Conference Center in West Columbia.

The annual luncheon is a statewide recognition event hosted by South Carolina’s economics and financial literacy education partners to celebrate student achievement and promote the importance of economic education. The event honors students whose work demonstrates exceptional understanding of key economic concepts through creative expression, while also recognizing educators who support and inspire student success.

During the luncheon, the students will receive framed versions of their artwork, monetary awards, commemorative certificates, and copies of the published calendar. Their teacher will also be recognized for her role in guiding and supporting their achievement.

“This remarkable accomplishment reflects the talent, creativity, and academic excellence of our students,” said Superintendent Dr. Shawn D. Foster. “Kaitlyn and Kimberly have taken complex economic concepts and transformed them into powerful visual stories. Their success is a testament to the high-quality instruction taking place at William J. Clark Middle School and across Orangeburg County School District.”

Malissa Wright, art teacher at William J. Clark Middle School, praised her students’ work and dedication. “Kaitlyn and Kimberly truly embraced the challenge of turning abstract economic concepts into meaningful visual stories,” Wright said. “They demonstrated creativity, critical thinking, and a willingness to push themselves artistically. I am incredibly proud of their accomplishments and the way they represent our school and district.”

Kaitlyn shared her excitement, stating, “It feels amazing to have my artwork chosen. I enjoyed learning about economics in a creative way, and I’m proud to represent my school and district.”
